On January 27, Apollo astronauts Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward White and Roger B Chaffee would die in a launching pad fire (these were the first deaths in the space program). On April 15, between 100,000 to 400,000 anti war protesters would march from Central Park in New York City to the U.N headquarters, also in New York. A similar protest in San Francisco would attract 50,000 people. In the Viet Nam War, May 19 would see the first U.S. airstrike against the North Vietnamese capitol of Hanoi. The week of May 21-27 was the deadliest week in the Viet Nam war so far-313 killed and 2,616 wounded. From June 5-10, War would explode in the Middle East

Race riots would explode in Newark, New Jersey from July 12-17 and in Detroit, Michigan on July 23. In the month of September, Hurricane Beaulah would strike the Texas Coast as a category 3 hurricane. On October 2 Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first Black Supreme Court Justice. On October 21-22, 50,000 people would take part in an anti war march on Washington, D.C. The population of the United States was now 200,000,000 as of November 20, 1967. On December 5, more than 1,000 anti war protesters attempted to close down the Induction Center in New York City. Among the 264 arrested were Dr. Benjamin Spock and poet Allen Ginsberg. The Silver Bridge on the Ohio River between Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Kanauga, Ohio would collapse on December 15, killing 46, people. As of December 20, 1967, there were now 474,000 American troops stationed in Viet Nam.

On January 1, 1967, The Green Bay Packers would defeat The Dallas Cowboys 34 to 27 to win the NFL title and The Kansas City Chiefs would defeat The Buffalo Bills 31 to 7 to win the AFL title-this would set up the 1st Super Bowl. On January 15, The Green Bay Packers would defeat The Kansas City Chiefs 35 to 10 to win Super Bowl I. In the NBA, The Philadelphia 76ers would defeat The San Francisco Warriors 4 games to 2. In the world of boxing, Muhammad Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title for refusing to be drafted. In the world of baseball, Mickey Mantle would become only the 6th player in MLB history to hit 500 home runs. He would accomplish this feat on May 14. On July 14, Eddie Matthews would become the 7th. The St. Louis Cardinals would defeat The Boston Red Sox 4 games to 2 to win the 1967 World Series. At the conclusion of the baseball season, The Kansas City A’s would move to Oakland, California (where a brand new Oakland Coliseum would be waiting for them). On December 31, The Green Bay Packers would defeat The Dallas Cowboys 21 to 17 to win the NFL title. Also on December 31, The Oakland Raiders would defeat The Houston Oilers 40 to7 to win the AFL Title. This would set up Super Bowl II between The Oakland Raiders and The Green Bay Packers-this game would be played on January 14, 1968.
