Lyndon Johnson was still the President and Hubert Humphrey was the Vice President of the United States.This was the year that Lyndon Johnson unveiled his plans for the “Great Society”. This year would see many demonstrations against the war in Viet Nam and it would also see an increase in troops sent to fight the war over there. Unemployment was now 5.2% and life expectancy was 70.2 years. We were now in the era of “Flower Power” and the desire for peace. On February 21, the controversial Malcolm X was assassinated. March 21 would see the beginning of the Martin Luther King march from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama. On April 11, 7 Midwestern states would see the wrath of a string of tornadoes-killing 271, injuring 5,000. On June 3 Astronaut Edward White became the first American to walk in space. On July 30 the Medicare Social Security Bill was signed by President Johnson at the Harry S Truman Library in Independence, Missouri. From August 11-16 racial tensions would explode in the Watts section of Los Angeles. In September, the weather would take center stage in the form of Hurricane Betsy.

The Boston Celtics would defeat he Los Angeles Lakers 4 games to 1 to win the NBA Championship. In Golf, Gary Player would win the U.S. Open and in the world of boxing, Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) would meet Sonny Liston one more time.

This was the fight that featured the “phantom punch” (the “punch is shown here and it didn’t look like a punch that would knock out a big man like Liston, you be the judge). In the world of baseball, Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers would pitch a perfect game on September 9 against The Chicago Cubs. Koufax would strike out 14 Cubs on his way to a 1-0 victory. The 1965 World Series was won by The Los Angeles Dodgers (they would defeat The Minnesota Twins 4 games to 3). In football, the AFL Title was won by the Buffalo Bills. They would defeat The San Diego Chargers 23 to 0. The 1965 NFL Title game would be held on January 2, 1966.
